DBT Storytelling Club
We empower the young kids, whose ages are between 7 and 12, to become more effective communicators and leaders. This club strives to provide a direct, fun and effective environment for kids to practice speech and leadership skills. Parent volunteers organize this club. However, we let kids run the regular weekly meeting independently.
Outside of the regular weekly meeting, to better help kids master communication and leadership skills, this club also provides mini lessons, and offers onsite training which is taught by professionals in different areas.
The Storytelling Master Club Program is divided into two phases. The kids can only move on to the next phase when they graduate from prior phase. They should grow up to be mature speakers and leaders after the two phases’ training and practice.
-
The first phase aims to help kids overcome the stage fright, build confidence, and master the basic communication and leadership skills. This phase lasts for 10 months, including 10 communication projects and 24 leadership projects. There is regular meeting every week except school breaks and holidays. Each kid usually need finish one communication project and two leadership projects in one month, plus two or more impromptu speeches.
-
The second phase emphasizes teamwork and mentoring. Five to eight kids take the challenge to build and grow a new club. They work as both normal members and mentors thus they can teach and share their experience. New kids get to watch and learn from experienced kids. The kids graduate by completing the mentor jobs of six main leadership roles and one speech. They’re going to gain the startup experience and know how to turn their ideas into reality.
Each club holds end-session family potluck every 4 months. There, we reward kids for doing their best and completing three speeches and all the leadership roles in that session. We also have personalized rewards, such as Always Keep Smiling, High Achiever, Most Improved, Good Helper, Problem Solver, Amazing Artist, Handwriting Hero, etc. The purpose is to keep our club at a positive and encouraging environment and help the kids build their unique characteristics.
We hold annual Storytelling Competitions for all club members. The winners are rewarded as The Best Speaker and The Best Leader.
